Okeechobee County approves senior meals contract, DOJ JAG grant and Toys for Tots fee waiver

Okeechobee County commissioners approved consent‑agenda items that include a one‑year senior meals contract and a U.S. Department of Justice JAG pass‑through grant for sheriff’s equipment and the narcotics task force.
County staff presented a 2026 standard rate agreement with the sheriff’s office to provide congregate and home‑delivered meals funded by the Older Americans Act, the Community Care for the Elderly grant and the Community Services Block Grant. Staff said the one‑year contract (Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2026) is for meal services at a rate of $5.25 per meal not to exceed $175,500.
Staff also recommended ratifying a JAG grant (through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement) for $55,938 with no local match; a related resolution (No. 2025‑76) and a budget amendment (26‑08) were listed to record the award in the FY26 budget.
During the meeting the board also unanimously approved a $20,249.25 firefighter cancer decontamination equipment grant from the Florida Department of Financial Services/State Fire Marshal; Chief Wooten said the grant will fund an extractor to clean SCBA packs and masks and that the county has budgeted the 25% local match.
Separately, the board granted a requested fee waiver of $1,587.50 for Toys for Tots to hold a toy distribution event at the Ag Center on Dec. 13, 2025. Jacqueline Schooley, the tourism and event center manager, presented the request on behalf of the organizer and the board voted to waive the fee.
All consent items and the equipment grant were accepted by unanimous voice votes.
