The applicant told the board he had parked only the tractor cab (no trailer) on his residential property for roughly 10 years and submitted two letters of neighbor support. The applicant said the vehicle was kept entirely on his property and did not block sidewalks or the street.
Board members said the parcel is a standard rectangular residential lot and that the hardship described by the applicant reflects a personal or business need rather than an unusual physical condition of the land. “We don’t have the authority to legally [grant the relief] because of the zoning ordinance,” the chair said, concluding the board could not rewrite the ordinance to allow heavy commercial vehicles in residential yards.
A motion to deny the variance was made and seconded and approved by the board. Staff suggested the applicant contact the Allentown Parking Authority for permitted truck parking locations in the city.
