Trustees praise student presentations, recognize employees and teachers of the year

At its April 8 meeting the Ocean View School District board spotlighted student learning and staff excellence across the district.
Village View Elementary Principal Shannon Mudry described two strategies to boost engagement: daily morning meetings (a video welcome plus a daily question or “puzzlement” to spark student curiosity) and a weekly bedtime‑story video series with family lesson plans. Mudry said the practices correlate with internal student surveys showing a 12 percent increase in students reporting happiness at school; she said parent responses on the district’s spring 2024 LCAP rose from 69 percent to about 90 percent for the school’s provision of resources to support at‑home learning.
Vista View Middle School presented its VEX IQ robotics program. Principal Manny Quesad and teacher Chris Olguin introduced students who described building and programming robots, troubleshooting mechanisms like gear ratios and catapults, and the teamwork required for competitive robotics.
The board also recognized district employees of the year: Dana Campbell (Harborview office manager), Mary Ellen Calderon (noon duty supervisor), Julie Slater (instructional assistant, English learner services — not present), Kathleen Miller (food service worker), and Thomas Savage (transportation mechanic). Teachers of the Year Danielle Osteen (Westmont, SDC) and Lori Zone (Marine View, middle school special education math) were honored as well.
Trustees repeatedly praised the events and programs and invited community members and board members to participate in classroom reading and future activities.
