Board approves leases, contracts and MOUs, discusses school safety after Vista View incident

The Ocean View School District Board of Trustees approved several consent and action items without opposition at its May 27 meeting and discussed potential security changes after a recent Vista View incident.
Actions taken by unanimous vote (5-0): an amended and restated lease between the district and Montessori Child Development Center; a consulting and non-auditing services contract with Ade Bailey LLP; an MOU with the Potsdam Foundation for the Art of Teaching at Golden View and Hope View schools; and contracts for independent educational evaluations for students with special needs. The minutes from the May 13 meeting and the consent calendar were also approved unanimously.
Motions were generally moved and seconded on the record (several items were moved by Vice President Souders and seconded by other trustees). The board's clerk read required public-comment and closed-session procedures at the start of the meeting, and staff said there was no reportable action from the earlier closed session concerning the superintendent's performance evaluation.
On safety, trustees and the clerk asked staff to research security upgrades for middle schools in light of an incident at Vista View in which a weapon was brought to campus. Trustees discussed options that could include a dedicated school resource officer, metal detectors at single points of entry, and associated costs (one trustee estimated total cost for a dedicated SRO at roughly $150,000 in past discussion). Staff said they would return with cost estimates and information for board consideration.
