Village staff confirmed that the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will present to the commission and residents in October about a large canal/pumping project that will affect areas along the village canal.
"The project's already funded — it's $210,000,000 funded," the manager said, and staff reported that preliminary drilling and field work are underway at nearby sites. Commissioners and residents asked whether affected properties might qualify for adaptation funding, including sewer hookups for homes currently on septic.
Commissioner Amsler asked staff to reach out to neighboring municipalities (including El Portal) to learn how they approached hooking homes to sewer and other mitigation steps. The commission agreed to invite an SFWMD representative to a focused presentation and to circulate materials to residents in advance so neighbors could prepare questions.
Staff cautioned residents not to expect the village to be able to stop a funded agency project but said SFWMD representatives had indicated they were open to hearing community input and discussing mitigation options.
The SFWMD presentation was scheduled as part of the agency's October outreach; staff said they would follow up with the agency on funding possibilities and whether targeted assistance could be coordinated for particularly vulnerable parcels near the canal.
