Planning staff outlines zoning updates tied to new state bills and local project schedule

Staff summarized a briefing held at the Sept. 15 city council meeting on Senate Bill 15 and Senate Bill 840 and said the city will update its zoning ordinance to comply with the new state laws. "The tax amendments to address those 2 bills will probably come before you... next month, October, and also to city council probably in November," Garrett Langford said. He added there will be further zoning amendments to address other bills next year.
Langford also listed recent city council actions on several planning cases and reminded commissioners of a joint meeting with city council and the Mesquite Economic Advisory Board scheduled for Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. He announced that Bethany McGill started that day as the city’s manager of historic preservation and executive director for historic Mesquite.
The staff report identified the comprehensive‑plan update and a roadway impact fee study as upcoming special projects next year and said staff is continuing recruitment for a senior planner position.
