Public commenters urge continued homelessness support; remote speaker seeks approval to host a short-term rental

During the council’s public-comment period, Bonnie Schifler Wilson described long-term housing instability, thanked Provo City staff, the police department, the Food and Care Coalition and churches for their support, and urged continued action to support warming centers and wraparound services.
“I have in my lifetime… lived in 30 houses and experienced over 3 years of chronic homelessness,” Wilson said, recounting personal experiences with housing instability and behavioral-health treatment and calling attention to community services that have assisted her.
Later in the meeting a remote commenter, Stephanie Smith, identified herself as a member of a military family purchasing a home in Provo and asked the council to begin a conversation about permitting that property to operate as a short-term rental when the family is not in residence. Smith described screening practices she used as a host in San Antonio and said her local adult children would manage the property; the clerk told her the two-minute comment period had ended and invited her to submit further information by email for staff review.
The public-comment period was limited to 15 minutes for items not on the agenda and two minutes per speaker; no formal council action was taken in response to either comment during the meeting.
