Board endorses creating a policy for board training and conference attendance

Board member (Speaker 3) said sample policies had been circulated and urged the board to create a clear process so members know what trainings to request and how to tie attendance to district goals. "I just wanna make sure no one's feeling, yeah," Speaker 3 said, asking that the process be transparent about budget, who attends and expected reporting back to the board.
Several board members—including Board member (Speaker 12) and Chair (Speaker 2)—said a policy should address three items: the annual training budget, how selections are made, and how the board benefits from participation. Board member (Speaker 9) recommended fiscal diligence: "just to be fiscally responsible" by understanding registration, travel and accommodation costs. Members discussed the value of OSBA and other conferences and how travel can support district priorities.
The board asked staff to attach the sample policies to the board book for review and to continue the discussion at the November work session so a policy could be in place before the bulk of conference season and to inform the coming budget cycle.
