Commission approves conditional-use permit for fiber cabinet on West Herriman Boulevard

The Herriman Planning Commission voted to approve a conditional-use permit to locate a fiber utility cabinet in the public right-of-way near 6400 West Herriman Boulevard after staff recommended approval with placement conditions.

Sheldon, a city staff member, described the proposal as a 50-by-25-by-34-inch cabinet that would sit on a 4-by-4-foot vault within the city right-of-way. "This is conditional use for fiber utility cabinet," Sheldon said, noting engineering had no concerns and that staff recommended approval with conditions. Staff suggested keeping the cabinet at least 15 feet from the back of the sidewalk or in line with existing utilities, whichever is greater, and about 50 feet from the back of curb on the west side to avoid obstructing an art panel on a precast wall.

Sheldon said he did not see the applicant in the meeting and that the applicant had not identified a preferred exact location, leaving placement to city direction consistent with the stated setbacks. A commissioner made a motion to approve the item subject to the conditions in staff's recommendation; the chair recorded the motion as "Motion by Preston, second by Forrest." Roll-call responses recorded affirmative votes from Preston, Tara, Forrest and Andrea and the chair declared the motion approved.

The permit was approved with the condition that the cabinet meet the setback and placement guidelines recommended by staff; the applicant must work with city staff to finalize the exact location and meet any engineering or permitting requirements before installation.
