Commission approves renaming a stretch of Macomb Place 'Paul Boone Way'

The Mount Clemens City Commission voted to name a segment of Macomb Place after longtime downtown booster Paul Boone.

Supporters told the commission at a public hearing that Boone’s decades of volunteer service helped revive and sustain the city’s downtown. Bill Gilchrist, the applicant and chair of the Downtown Development Authority, said he was “happy to be here, in support of this particular request,” and described Boone as a prolific downtown booster. Public commenter Mickey Weiss called Boone “my silent giant” and urged the commission to approve the memorial naming.

The city manager’s office explained the application complied with the city’s commemorative-naming policy and that fees for signage and installation would be the responsibility of the applicant. Commissioners spoke in favor on the record, praising Boone’s civic leadership and contributions to downtown events and redevelopment.

A motion to approve the commemorative name — to be called Paul Boone Way between Pine Street and southbound Gratiot Avenue — was moved and later passed by roll call. The chair announced the motion passed.

The commission did not specify an installation date for signs; staff said administrative and hard costs for the plaque or sign would be borne by the applicant and that the naming meets the city’s policy requirements for commemorative honors. The commission moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
