Board shortens 2023-24 student year by one day; keeps required instructional hours

The Manassas Park school board voted to adjust the 2023-24 academic calendar to end the student year one day earlier.
Mister Neff presented the request to move the last student day from Friday, June 7, to Thursday, June 6, which would remain a half day for students and make Friday, June 7 the final teacher work day. "By doing so, that would make the seventh the last teacher work day of the school year," Neff said, and staff noted the division exceeds the 990 instructional hours required by the state.
After brief questions from board members about community feedback and whether the change merited overnight consideration, a motion to vote on the calendar change was made, seconded and approved by the board.
Board members were told the change would not reduce required instructional hours and that the division will continue to monitor any community concerns.
