Cougar Elementary reports progress under Virginia ‘Birth‑to‑5’ standards; board spotlights marching band and robotics honors

Jessica Roach, assistant principal at Cougar Elementary, described the school's VQB‑5 participation, the classroom observation protocol and the district's work to raise instructional rigor. Roach said observers completed external reviews covering 75% of classes, that the school earned 550 points from class observations plus roughly 100 points for curriculum, and that the district's composite score is about 670 — short of the 700 threshold Roach said is needed to reach "exceeding expectations." "So we're working really hard to try to reach that with some additional professional development and really increasing that rigor," Roach said.
Separately, Dr. Crosser and coaches highlighted fall achievements: Manassas Park High School Marching Cougars earned top placements at regional competitions, a superior at the Virginia State Marching Assessment and a Chairman's Award at the Greater Manassas Christmas parade; band staff named included Molly Burlaski (director), Christina Schenk (assistant) and Anna Lowry (color guard instructor). Mackenzie Bissler and co‑coach Jared Granger reported that Manassas Park Elementary robotics brought home three trophies at a recent regional meet and had two teams qualify for state competition at James Madison University.
Board members praised students and staff for sportsmanship and community representation. The board acknowledged PTSO support for robotics competitions and encouraged continued community backing for extracurricular programs.
