County to return part of Buggy Wheel Ranch Road to U.S. Forest Service ahead of heavy haul traffic

Public Works explained the county originally took responsibility for the road decades ago to access a transfer station; with new mining activity inbound the Forest Service and Drake Cement have proposed arrangements under which the Forest Service will administer most of the road (to be maintained as a well‑maintained gravel Level 3 Forest Service road) while the county retains the paved section up to Starlight Prairie to serve prospective subdivision access. The board was told that 100% design plans were nearly completed, advertising for construction would be posted later in the month, and construction could begin April or May. After the work is complete the board will act to formally relinquish the larger section and update a special use permit to reflect the county's retained segment.
Supervisors asked about costs for overlays (public works estimated a 1.5‑inch overlay at roughly $800,000 for the paved section) and were told Drake Cement is expected to maintain the haul segment under an agreement with the Forest Service.
