The Onalaska School Board on Feb. 24 recognized members of the district’s ski and snowboard program after a season that included multiple podium finishes and a state meet sweep by a senior athlete.
"It's a great snowboarding speed season for racing this year," senior Bodie Callaway told the board, listing equipment and facility improvements at the mountain and thanking the Onalaska Booster Club, athletic directors and coaches for their support. Coach Cooper Cataway displayed individual and team medals and described the state championship weekend schedule.
Board members asked how many Onalaska students participate; presenters said about 20 students from Onalaska were in the co-op program and six competed on the state team. Callaway reported the AOWS cooperative team fielded 47 racers this season and that he swept three state events, earning first place in each discipline he entered and qualifying to compete at nationals in Copper Mountain, Colorado, in March.
Coach Cooper Cataway and student leaders noted the program runs as a cooperative with nearby schools (Aquinas, Autolask, West Salem and Luther), and they credited new snowmaking and local volunteer support for stronger early-season training. "Thank you to the Onalaska Booster Club for supporting the team," Callaway said, and the board joined in wishing the students success at nationals.
The board’s recognition concluded with congratulations from the chair and a request that the athletics staff share results after nationals.
