House honors Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters on retirement after 48 years

The Tennessee House of Representatives adopted a resolution honoring Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters on the occasion of his retirement after about 48 years in elected office.
Representative Ashley introduced HJR 70, saying the resolution recognizes Waters’ long tenure and his role in Sevier County’s growth. Several members spoke in praise of Waters’ leadership and mentorship, with Representative Farmer calling Waters a longtime guide and mentor to younger officials.
Mayor Larry Waters, who was recognized on the floor, thanked the assembly and his constituents. “My heart is full of gratitude, but it is also full of hope for the future of Sevier County, and hope for the state of Tennessee,” Waters said.
The resolution recounted Waters’ election at age 25 in 1978, noted his decades of service and described his contributions to county development and tourism. Members from both chambers and visiting family and staff joined in a ceremonial photo at the well following the remarks.
The House moved on after the ceremonial recognition; the chamber recessed later in the day with regular business still pending.
