The Meridian School District board held a first reading of Procedure 21-51, an update to the district’s interscholastic activities procedure, Presenter said, noting the document "had not been updated since 2011." Presenter said the district's attorney characterized the prior layout as "barbaric" and that staff have revised the procedure to align it with the district strategic plan and the district discipline policy (31-42).
The proposed changes add explicit references to marijuana and controlled substances, update language about e-cigarettes and dates, remove certain language on physical appearance, and align unsportsmanlike-conduct provisions to WIAA guidance, Presenter said. "They sought feedback from the coaches," Presenter added, summarizing the revision process.
Board members asked whether the academic and attendance requirements now mirror WIAA minimums. Presenter said the WIAA sets the minimum standards and "districts can go more stringent if they choose." On attendance and practice-day questions, Presenter said current text emphasizes that athletes must attend school on days of competition and that an unexcused absence for any portion of the day can make a student ineligible; Presenter offered to follow up with Brian to clarify practice-day enforcement.
A board member suggested exploring alternative uses for fields affected by infrastructure repairs, such as sand courts that could generate tournament revenue, but staff said the specific area discussed is slated to become a practice and JV soccer field and that another nearby area is reserved for the new district office.
Presenter closed the item as a first reading, invited board members to submit questions by email and noted the board’s next meeting date in late July. No vote on the procedure was taken at this meeting.
