Parks advisory board confirms work-plan highlights and forms three committees to focus programming

Wilmington — The Parks Advisory Board reviewed its annual work plan on Oct. 15 and confirmed items staff will report to city council, then discussed formation and staffing of three committees to advance the plan.

Staff (Speaker 3) said the packet includes the board’s top accomplishments and invited members to suggest additions before staff compiles a report to city council. The board discussed focusing follow-up work on riverwalk activation, open-space preservation and the Adopt-a-Park initiative.

The board confirmed three committees: parks & greenway (assigned volunteers Joe, Ingrid, Franklin and Paul in the transcript), an engagement committee (goal: invite new city council members as guests and host meetings in park facilities) and a student involvement committee (focused on UNCW and CFCC student involvement; volunteers listed in the packet included Rhonda, Lemitrius and David). Members discussed formats for committee work, including brief breakouts during regular meetings or separate virtual coordination.

Several members volunteered to chair or serve on committees; Speaker 4 noted the board can determine meeting frequency and whether to allot short breakout time during full meetings. The board agreed staff will support whichever approach the board chooses and will share the committee assignments and the Adopt-a-Park Google Doc with members.
