Wilmington parks staff outline Greenfield Park centennial plans, time capsule and community events

Wilmington — City parks staff outlined plans on Oct. 15 for Greenfield Park’s centennial celebration, which they said will begin Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. and include a time capsule burial, children’s activities, vendor booths and a free concert.

Speaker 4 said the Rotary Club is a major partner and described a planned redesign and landscaping for the Rotary Garden tied to a Rotary capital campaign. Staff invited local groups — including the Cape Fear Garden Club and community centers — to participate and asked board members to help publicize the event and solicit items for the time capsule.

The time capsule will be buried during the ceremony and opened in 100 years, staff said. Items can be submitted up to the day of the event but must fit size guidelines (no larger than roughly 4-by-4 and within an 18-inch to 2-foot cylindrical capsule, per staff description).

Speaker 4 said corporate affairs and Isaiah Levin, the city marketing coordinator mentioned in the discussion, have promoted the event on social media, and that posts had reached more than 1,200 engagements at the time of the meeting. Staff also noted Live Nation has expressed interest in participating and that the afternoon will feature a free concert with local musicians.

Staff said they will circulate a schedule of elected-official remarks and partner presentations to the board so members know when to attend or participate.
