Wausau School District reports slight decline in seclusion and restraint incidents for 2023–24
Summary
District staff reported that 27 students experienced seclusion or restraint interventions during 2023–24, encompassing 58 total incidents (23 seclusion, 27 restraint, 8 combined), a slight decline from the previous year; the district tracks date, time and location for each incident.
A district presenter gave the board an overview of seclusion and restraint data for the 2023–24 school year, reporting a modest decline in the number of students involved.
"Last year, the number of students involved in the intervention of seclusion and restraint was 27," the presenter said, adding that there were 23 seclusion incidents, 27 restraint incidents, eight combined seclusion-and-restraint events, and a total of 58 incidents.
Board members asked whether the district tracks where these interventions occur — for example, general education classrooms, special-education settings, cafeterias or other locations — and the presenter confirmed the district tracks date and time and does record location to help school teams review each situation and consider training or program adjustments.
The presenter and board described the trend as downward compared with the prior year and said teams convene after incidents to evaluate needs for training or program changes. The full seclusion-and-restraint report was included in the meeting attachments.
