Consolidation planning moves ahead; board authorizes administration to explore sales of closed buildings

"We wanted to separate what the Task Force did and created one for the consolidation, what we're calling consolidation 2025, linking to the Task Force," Williams said, describing an FAQ to be posted on the district website and staff visits to impacted schools. He said the district reopened the retirement window and that four people had submitted retirement paperwork so far. The administration also identified Hawthorne as a likely East-side summer-school location to give receiving schools more planning time.
The committee then considered how to manage empty buildings after consolidation. Administration reported multiple community inquiries about purchasing closed properties and asked whether it could begin preliminary conversations. Staff said there were already initial contacts on multiple properties and recommended developing basic pricing and property details. After discussion about realtors and staff capacity, the board moved that administration may begin early-stage work to explore selling the buildings and involve a realtor if appropriate; the motion carried and two members announced abstentions.
The committee requested that staff return with finalized boundaries and principal assignments for the Feb. 10 meeting and continue providing regular communication and FAQs for families and staff.
