New trustees sworn in; Blake King elected board president

Two newly elected members of the School City of Hammond Board of School Trustees were sworn in at the board's Jan. 7 organizational meeting, and officers for 2025 were chosen.
Angelica Herrera, a Hammond resident and public notary, administered the oath to Melissa Guerra. A second oath was given to Evangeline L. Stanford. After the ceremonial swearing-in, the board moved into procedural business.
Trustee nominations produced uncontested choices for the board leadership. Trustee Blake King was nominated and accepted the presidency; a voice vote confirmed the selection. Trustee Spencer was nominated and confirmed as vice president, and Trustee Evangeline Stanford was nominated and approved as secretary. The board then filled or tabled several committee and delegate assignments, including the Indiana School Boards Association delegate and a Hammond Redevelopment Commission appointment.
Board members who spoke during the organizational session emphasized continuity and a focus on student-centered work for the year. The board also announced its regular-meeting schedule for 2025: the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the administration center, 41 William Street, with executive sessions from 5:15 to 6 p.m.
The meeting adjourned after routine motions to accept appointments and adopt the calendar.
