Summary
Village View principal and marine science lead described how marine science is embedded into classroom routines; third graders presented projects on coral reefs and plastics and invited the community to a free Marine Science Expo on March 4.
Village View School principal Shannon Mudry and marine science lead Christine Mayer told the Ocean View School District board on Feb. 24 that the school's marine science curriculum has been reimagined and embedded into daily instruction.
Mudry described new family-facing resources — a weekly "wave" newsletter with vocabulary and puzzlements and a monthly student newsletter called the Dolphin Dive that spotlights local marine scientists and field opportunities. "These enhancements have provided our students and families with more opportunities to learn, think, and speak like marine scientists," Mudry said.
Christine Mayer described class projects that culminated in a schoolwide marine science expo. Mayer brought three third graders who described how warmer waters bleach coral, how some sunscreens can damage reefs, and how plastics harm marine life. The students said their class is designing reusable bags and building models for coral restoration. One student invited the board and public to the Village View Marine Expo on March 4.
Mudry said the expo — supported by the Village View PTO — will be a free community event for OVSD families and will feature partners including the Long Beach State Shark Lab, Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division and State Beach Junior Lifeguards. The district thanked the students for their presentation and encouraged board members and families to attend the March 4 event.
The board praised the students' public speaking and thanked teachers and staff for program development. No formal board action was taken; the segment was presented as a school program report and community invitation.
