District reviews Student Support Center remodel, staging upgrades and a donated set of bleachers

Mr. Triplehorn walked the board through the Student Support Center’s stage-of-work documents, noting substantial ADA work — widening doorways and restrooms — plus selective demolition, flooring, stucco repairs and trenching under the building for plumbing. He said initial contractor estimates exceeded the budget and that he would meet with the contractor to trim scope and bring a revised price back to the board. "We have to tunnel under the building, which is an ex kind of expensive in-depth," Triplehorn said, noting the project’s complexity and the need to meet ADA requirements.
On staging, Triplehorn presented a modular 20-foot-by-32-foot staging system, including skirting and adjustable stairs, that he estimated would list at about $20,500 from the manufacturer and roughly $25,000 when vendor handling and carts are included. He said the district plans to upgrade the gym PA electronics and install wireless microphones; that work, he estimated, would likely be under $20,000.
Triplehorn also described a donation from Zuni Public Schools: a relatively modern set of aluminum bleachers with ADA ramps that the district will disassemble at the donor site, transport during winter break and reinstall after spring concrete work. "They're really nice bleachers, actually… it's saving us a ton of money," he said, adding the donated seating will reduce the need to buy new bleachers, which he estimated could cost roughly $300,000 to purchase and install.
Board members asked about local contractor participation and reuse of local suppliers; Triplehorn said he had sought local bids where possible but had encountered limited response and would try again. The board asked that the administration continue to pursue cost reductions and report back with a final price and procurement plan.
The district did not approve construction contracts at the meeting; staff will return with refined cost estimates and any required budget adjustments.
