Commissioners flag Portage County courtroom caseloads, direct staff to consult judges about a third county judge

Portage County commissioners spent an extended portion of the Sept. 5 meeting discussing the county's courthouse capacity and judicial caseloads, with at least one commissioner saying recent figures show Portage County judges carry substantially heavier dockets than peers.
"For the last 2 years, Portage County has the highest case rate," a commissioner said, describing judges with roughly 900 cases each compared with 300–400 elsewhere. The speaker urged the board to start the process to request a third county judge and to explore options that do not rely on building a new courthouse immediately.
Other commissioners noted the Ohio Supreme Court must authorize adding a judgeship and that individual local judges have offered differing views on whether an additional judge is needed. The board directed staff to reach out to local judges to ask if they want another judge, what triggers would justify the request, and what space or procedural changes might reduce burden.
Commissioners also discussed alternatives such as reconfiguring existing courthouse space, looking at other county facilities for relocation of some functions, and pacing any request so it does not outpace realistic funding or demand. No formal application to the Ohio Supreme Court was filed at the meeting; the board concluded with a directive that staff will contact the judges and report back.
Next steps noted at the meeting: county staff will consult the two resident judges for their priorities and prepare options for commissioner review.
