Board reviews updated curriculum handbook and questions on AP/dual-credit delivery

The board reviewed the first reading of the district's revised curriculum handbook and discussed AP and dual-credit course delivery.

Staff explained the major change: the district did not renew the Embark subscription and is now housing curriculum documents in Google Drive, organized by building, grade level and content so teachers and substitutes can access standards, lessons, assessments and materials. "We want any teacher, new staff member, sub to be able to go in and have a curriculum that they can pick up and teach," the academic presenter said.

Members pressed for clarity about how AP and dual-credit points are calculated for the APR and whether the prevalence of virtual delivery contributes to lower advanced-credit points. Staff replied that the APR points come from a combination of student course grades and assessment scores and acknowledged many AP/dual-credit offerings are virtual. "There's quite a few that are virtual," a staff speaker said, and the board discussed the potential advantage of having in-person instructors for those courses.

The handbook revisions otherwise focus on making curriculum visible and viable and providing consistent materials across buildings. The item was presented as a first reading; board members will return questions about AP/dual-credit scoring to staff for further detail.
