Superintendent proposes calendar adjustment after winter power outages; board approves bulletin with one abstention

Superintendent Dr. Chase told the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township School District Board of Education on Jan. 6 that she plans to recommend a calendar adjustment to address recent emergency school closings.
Dr. Chase said two schools (Brooklawn and The Hills) experienced power outages and missed instructional days; she proposed converting June 2 into a single-session day for those two schools so the district meets the state's 181-day instructional requirement. "I will be recommending a calendar adjustment at the next board meeting," Dr. Chase said, and indicated she would send communication to staff and families after the board approves the calendar change.
The board also received Superintendent's Bulletin No. 9, which listed items 1 through 39 plus addendum items 40 through 42 and several read-ins. The board conducted a roll-call vote and approved the bulletin; the record shows one abstention limited to item 31 and yes votes on the remaining items.
Board members confirmed that Jan. 19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) will remain a holiday and that only the two schools affected by emergency closures would attend the proposed June 2 single session, pending formal calendar approval.
The public-comment period was opened and no members of the public spoke. Earlier in the meeting student representatives reported upcoming competitions and athletic events at the high school.
The agenda included a motion to move into a closed session after the break to discuss confidential HIB matters; the chair said action on those matters is anticipated later in the public session.
