Brown Deer trustees approve disconnecting North 47th Street, plan shared-use path

Trustees voted to move forward with Alternative 2 for the North 47th Street reconstruction project, directing staff and the engineering firm to proceed with design toward bidding after a public information process that staff said showed neighborhood support for a walking path in place of reconnecting the roadway.
"Based on that response ... staff is recommending that we move forward with that alternative 2 and we need 47th Street disconnected," the Director said, describing the site history and outreach. The recommendation followed an emergency repair after an August washout and an engineering contract for design work.
Staff outlined schedule milestones: design work over the next month, advertised bidding planned for mid-April, bids to be opened April 30, and construction staged to avoid in-stream work (work not to begin until after DNR's in‑stream restrictions lift on Aug. 15). Staff also said the Department of Transportation had appraised an access-point area linked to the Riverside Landing development and proposed a split of negotiated costs, with installment terms from DOT.
Trustees and staff discussed neighborhood traffic concerns and signage; staff said some neighbors reported no increase in cut-through traffic, while others had concerns and signage/traffic counts could be added if needed. The motion to approve Alternative 2 passed by voice vote.
The board asked staff to proceed with final design and bid documents so the project can be advertised and brought back for contract award following bid review.
