The Orem Library Advisory Commission heard from staff that the city's reorganization will add a dedicated library director role and that the job was posted on the city's website this week.
The presenter, identified at the meeting as the Executive Director of Community Services, said the reorganization will shift his role toward overseeing community services while the new library director will manage two core divisions: patron experience and collection services. "We will have a library director; this position posted on Thursday," he said, and added that the city has cross-posted the vacancy with library networks and expects a robust applicant pool.
Staff described the hiring process as multi-stage: an initial review of applications roughly three weeks after posting, followed by two or three rounds of interviews for external candidates. "My guess is 6 to 8 weeks for the hiring process," the staff presenter said, noting city director hires typically include video and in-person interviews and time for reference checks.
Commission members were invited to participate where appropriate. The presenter said human resources has allowed limited advisory-commission involvement in the process and that an invitation to take part in candidate review or end-stage formats might be extended to either the full commission or the chair. He asked for commission input on interview questions and candidate priorities.
Commissioners and staff discussed the qualities they want in a director: experience with traditional librarianship, the ability to work quickly with staff, and a fit with the library's local community. One commissioner emphasized wanting someone who "understands deeply Orem, Utah," while another noted that bringing in external ideas can also be valuable.
Next steps: staff will continue to accept applications while scheduling an initial review in about three weeks; the presenter said the library hopes to have someone in place in time for summer programs, with onboarding likely in May or June if the process proceeds on schedule.
