Board grants South Indivisible use of Greenwood green with conditions, denies amplification

The Greenwood Board of Public Works and Safety voted to allow a South Indivisible rally on the green space in front of the field house, subject to restrictions intended to protect the park and public safety.

Leah Kramer, who identified herself as representing South Indivisible, told the board the group plans a largely stationary rally with a short single-file march around a nearby block and no mechanical amplification. Kramer said the group will provide a safety plan, a trauma nurse for first aid, two legal observers and a volunteers coordinator but has not yet secured event liability insurance.

Chair moved to grant the request on the condition there be no amplified sound and that the organizer coordinate with Officer Jason Grama on placement so the group stays off sidewalks and avoids damage to the grass; the motion passed by voice vote.

Kramer told the board the group is preparing to arrive early to set up and would clean up after the event; she said 25 people had signed up so far but that attendance could grow. Kramer also said she had discussed the route and staging with the officer and that the group would not block roadways.

The board’s conditions require the organizer to work with police on placement and to avoid mechanical amplification; the board advised staying off the grass if it is muddy. The chair noted appreciation for the group’s stated commitment to nonviolence.

The board closed the item after adopting the conditions and wishing the organizers well.
