Mount Clemens commission approves property sale to church, precinct move and multiple consent items

The Mount Clemens City Commission on March 1 moved through routine and legislative business, authorizing a small property sale, temporary election‑precinct relocation, an amended events calendar and routine consent items.
Community Development Director Tengley described a request from Zion Temple Church to purchase a 22‑by‑90‑foot strip of city land adjacent to the church parking lot at 211 North Broadway for $200 so the church can own and improve the area. The commission voted to authorize the sale and directed the city attorney to prepare a settlement statement and quitclaim deed.
The city clerk requested approval to temporarily relocate Precinct 2 from Wilson Gym (58 South Wilson) to Christian Lighthouse Church (57 Church Street) for the August and November 2021 elections because the Wilson Gym will be used during library reconstruction. The commission approved the change; affected voters will be notified by mail and public postings paid for by the Mount Clemens library. The transcript cited Michigan election law as the governing authority for timing requirements on precinct moves.
The commission also approved an amended 2021 Downtown Development Authority events calendar — adding an Uptown Easter Egg Extravaganza, a car show and drive‑in movie nights — and approved purchases and payment of invoices and the consent agenda. Roll calls for these motions returned affirmative votes.
Public participation included a request from Ruthie (Stevens) to support the YMCA day of giving; Beverly Lashore asked the commission to consider using remaining fundraising money to support the Karnes Center and urged attention to accessibility and safety; and resident Eric Andrew Rick urged attention to potholes on Mulberry Street, which serves schools, a church and polling places.
In the city manager’s report, Johnson said COVID‑19 cases were trending downward locally, staff vaccination continues, Fire Chief Greg Shipman began his first official week, and the school board has given official notice of its desire to terminate the lease for the Karnes property; Johnson said he will meet with the superintendent this week and commissioners asked for a workshop to follow that discussion.
The commission adjourned after brief commissioners’ remarks.
