Commissioners asked staff to require building inspections — including fire, electrical and plumbing checks — before putting the facility into regular use, especially where children will be present. Commissioner Rentz said, “I would really hate for some kid to… get injured,” and pressed for safety inspections prior to further occupancy.
Several commissioners said the five‑year reimbursement period felt long and discussed shortening it; one proposal to shorten to four years drew support during discussion. Staff noted the Boys & Girls Club is organizing programming at Karnes this summer and that insurance certificates have been obtained to cover activities in July and August. The commission instructed staff to continue negotiations as needed and to return updated language following school‑board review and any attorney input.
