A deputy director identified event components (bands, porta-potties, supplies) when asked to explain what sits inside the special-events line.
A major operational issue was the Reindeer Run. PRCA staff said the longtime coordinator had announced retirement and the logistical, sponsorship and merchandise work normally done months ahead would be difficult to execute on the short timeline. Staff recommended taking a year off to rebrand; the council discussed community disappointment but also the staffing and timing realities. Council members agreed to leave a $15,000 placeholder in the budget to preserve the option of the run, while cutting other PRCA items to reach the agreed departmental reduction total. A deputy director said, “we would have to make a concerted effort as a city to gain support from community contributions” if the run is held this year.
Council members asked staff to provide line-item specifics and confirmed they would revisit uncertain items at the public hearing if needed. Staff said PRCA cuts will not eliminate options for certain events but will change the level of city support and that staff will return with final figures.
