Pataskala council hears street committee updates on bridges, sidewalks and staffing

The Pataskala City Council heard a detailed update from the street committee on ongoing and planned infrastructure projects and staffing needs.
Tommy, speaking for the committee, said the Brown Boulevard Bridge survey is complete and staff are evaluating structure types and alternatives, Meeks Street bridge plans are at stage two with construction eyed for 2027, and Mill Street bridge design work is in progress. He said the Mink Street garage expansion is substantially complete and within budget.
The committee flagged $70,000 available for sidewalk infill this year and reported the 2025 streets program came in $219,000 under budget; Tommy said the committee will recommend reallocating those savings at an upcoming council meeting. He also noted the committee recommended purchase of a street sweeper that is budgeted for 2026.
On staffing, Tommy said the committee supports adding a senior-level position in Allen's office but staff found a charter issue: the city charter may classify that position as a department head or engineer. The city will evaluate title options (including a deputy public service director) and align the proposal with charter requirements before bringing it back to council.
Council members did not take final action on a new hire or reclassification at the meeting; the committee will return with additional details and proposed charter changes or title adjustments as needed.
