Elmsford recreation department reports program turnout, delays some permits until April 10

The Elmsford Recreation Department reported on youth-program participation and scheduling changes at the village board meeting on March 2.
A Recreation Department official said the department will host an "end of season pizza awards party for the boys and girls recreation basketball through sixth graders at the senior community center, Friday, March 13 at 06:30PM." The official reported 55 youths participated in the winter program and that a winter girls volleyball clinic led by Helmut Grady concludes Saturday, March 7, with 28 girls having taken part.
The official described a four-week "March Madness" boys basketball tournament that began the prior Saturday and includes 32 boys in grades 7–9. "The uniqueness of the tournament is that we are teaching the players lessons in leadership by allowing them to select their own teams, strategize, manage the game, and resolve conflicts," the official said. "Parents are only allowed to cheer. They are not allowed to coach or interfere in any manner."
Officials also reported results from recent tryouts: five travel teams were selected for ages 9–14, and "23 Elmsford youth excelled at the tryouts," the recreation official said. Staff said they expect teams to compete in tournaments in the tri-state area in spring.
The department told the board that soccer-field permits for Deluca Park and Carroll Park will remain closed until April 10 because of extensive snow and the need for the fields to dry out. Camp registration was postponed because of an online system issue and is scheduled to open Friday, March 6, the official said.
The recreation update included a list of upcoming school and community events, including a Board of Education meeting on March 11 at 7 p.m., the Grady drama performance on March 12 at 6:30 p.m., and performances of Alexander Hamilton High School’s "The Little Mermaid" in March.
Next steps: department staff will await a response from the school district on gym availability for a planned spring program and will reopen permit applications for fields once conditions permit.
