County GIS presenter demos automation to meet new NextGen 911 data schedule

Dave explained the state’s new schedule requires more frequent uploads (the state guidance requires 14‑day submissions for populations greater than 37,000) and that preparing and uploading the data manually would consume significant staff time. He demonstrated two scripts he built that automate the export, validation and upload process; he said the export and packaging that took about eight hours manually now runs in under three minutes and the tool logs and alerts on failures.
Dave said Champaign County estimated about $14,000 per year in labor cost to meet the more frequent schedule and that, multiplied across maintainers statewide, automation could translate into large savings. He reported the state reviewed the code and temporarily paused the compliance schedule while it considers wider rollout.
Committee members commended the work and asked for follow‑up between county GIS and the statewide administrator. Dave said he would share the tool and follow the state’s testing timeline.
Next steps: GIS committee and state administrators will continue testing the automation; county staff will monitor the state’s compliance timeline and follow up with the committee as needed.
