Cook County honors communications lead Nick Shields as he moves to Cook County Health

Cook County commissioners formally recognized Nick Shields for his work leading communications on several major county initiatives as he transitions from the president’s office to Cook County Health.
The board read a resolution highlighting Shields’ role in shaping American Rescue Plan Act projects including a guaranteed-income pilot, a medical-debt relief initiative and Project Rainbow, the county’s youth-facing communications program. Commissioners praised his accessibility, professionalism and role in representing Cook County at the White House and in other forums.
Accepting the recognition, Shields reflected on his public-service career and the values that guided his work. “I have had the honor of dedicating my life, my adult life to public service,” he said, thanking his family, colleagues and mentors and noting the partnership between county government and community organizations.
Several commissioners—Vice Chair Lowery, Commissioners Bridal, Naya, Scott and others—added personal remarks about Shields’ mentorship and impact. Commissioners also used the recognition to highlight related agenda items, including recent funding and housing initiatives announced earlier in the meeting.
A photo opportunity followed the remarks. The recognition was included on the meeting’s consent calendar and moved forward as part of the board’s routine approvals.
