Compass Health, Project Homeless brief commissioners on services and warming center use

Commissioners heard brief updates on homelessness services from Compass Health and Project Homeless during the Feb. 24 meeting.
Johnny Cupp of Compass Health (attendance requested by Commissioner Bradley) described the intake and admissions process and emphasized that most Compass Health programs are voluntary, with Royal Oaks noted as an exception. ‘‘Every story is different,’’ a Compass Health representative said, describing varied client needs and the observation that many individuals who arrive are returned to their place of origin rather than remaining in the county.
Project Homeless representatives said the group meets monthly at First Baptist Church. Celia Harmon, who oversees the county warming center, told the commission the shelter does not open until temperatures reach 20°F or below and that more than 35 individual guests have been served this winter.
Commissioners and staff acknowledged ongoing coordination needs and encouraged continued outreach and public meetings to explain available services and any gaps.
