Mayor Larissa Sutton read a proclamation declaring February 2026 as Black History Month for the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The text of the proclamation, as read into the record, says Black History Month “pays tribute to the contributions that African Americans have made to American history and their struggles for freedom and equality,” and references the Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s centennial theme.
The proclamation praises local Black community leaders, educators, business owners and professionals and calls on citizens to “recognize and confront continuing issues by eliminating barriers” and to promote health, wellness and knowledge across the community. No members of the public signed up to speak on the proclamation, and the item was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote during the meeting.
The proclamation is a ceremonial recognition by the commission; it does not create new law or spending. The commission moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
