Clay County school board extends Director Timmons Monroe's contract by one year after evaluation

The Clay County School Board voted at its May 9, 2024 meeting to extend Director Timmons Monroe's contract by one year, moving the contract's end date to June 30, 2027.

Board chair, speaking after presenting compiled evaluation results, said, "The overall average is 4.37," a score the chair described as slightly below "exceeds expectations" and above "consistently meets expectations." Board discussion noted the state's limitation on director contracts to four years and that the board had previously extended Monroe's contract through June 30, 2026.

The contract extension was put to a motion during the director evaluation item and the board voted to approve the one-year extension. The meeting record states the motion passed; no roll-call vote tally was recorded in the transcript shown at the meeting.

Why it matters: the director leads district operations and staffing; the extension locks in leadership while the board continues regular annual evaluations and sets a schedule for re-review. Board members discussed advertisement and timing requirements tied to contract changes and noted statutory limits on multi-year contracts.

Also acted at the meeting: the board approved the district's 2023-24 general purpose budget after a presentation by district staff (see below) and voted to roll over custodial service contracts at current pricing. Those items were moved and approved during the same meeting.

Board next steps: meeting discussion indicated staff will solicit and evaluate bids on capital projects (see separate article on the CTE building plans) and that the board will hold a planning meeting in June before finalizing budgetary salary adjustments and other personnel matters.
