Historic Preservation Commission votes to send letter to Fairbanks mayor and to back CLG grant application

At its March 3 session the Fairbanks North Star Borough Historic Preservation Commission voted to send a letter to the City of Fairbanks mayor urging cooperation on items of interest to the commission and clarifying support for property‑tax incentives for historic properties. The motion to send a letter — modeled on a previous borough letter to the borough mayor — passed on a recorded roll call with a 6‑0 vote.

Later the commission reconvened a special meeting to consider a draft application to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Office of History and Archaeology for Certified Local Government (CLG) grant funds. Staff described the application status, letters of support already received (State Parks and the Tanana‑Yukon Historical Society), and outstanding fiscal match and resume items. Commissioners moved and seconded to support submission of the CLG grant application; the commission voted in favor on roll call, 6‑0.

Both votes were recorded on the public record. The motions were advisory in nature: the letter to the City mayor is a request for coordination and follow‑up, not an order; the CLG motion authorizes staff to submit the application with the commission’s written support. Staff indicated they will follow up with the mayor’s office about the existing borough letter, provide the revised wording for the SS Nenana paragraph as requested, and complete submission requirements for the CLG grant.
