Commissioners approve special-use permit to expand Camp Furry Friends kennel

Chair opened a quasi-judicial hearing on a special-use permit application for an expansion of the Camp Furry Friends dog day care and boarding facility at 2230 Old Union Church Road. Shane Stewart of the planning office described the plan for a consolidated 6,000-square-foot building with a covered 60-by-60 outdoor play area, a minimum 6-foot fence and required 100-foot setbacks from adjacent property lines.

Stewart said staff reviewed the applicant’s materials, noted the owner provided a current boarding license that covers up to 40 dogs and verified the site meets the county’s special-use standards. He told commissioners NCDOT indicated the proposed driveway location is suitable for a commercial driveway permit and that the applicant has paid for a survey confirming setback compliance. Stewart said the proposed building location is outside mapped floodplain and that the staff recommendation and example findings support approval.

The applicant’s representative, Jessica Hallman, was present and did not request any changes to the application. After the board read findings and discussed the proposal’s buffers and site access, a commissioner moved to approve the special-use permit; the motion passed by voice vote.

The permit approval allows the owner to consolidate existing structures into the proposed facility and proceed with building plans subject to any conditions the county’s land-development rules require. The board congratulated the applicant and wished the business success.

The board will notify the applicant about any remaining permitting steps (building permits, commercial driveway permit from NCDOT and inspections) before construction may begin.
