College Station proclaims November 2025 Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Mayor John P. Nichols read a joint proclamation declaring November 2025 Lung Cancer Awareness Month for the cities of College Station and Bryan and Brazos County and presented the document to representatives of local screening advocates.
The proclamation, signed by Mayor Nichols and partner officials, noted that lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality and highlighted disparities in diagnosis and treatment for women and racial minorities. Anish Sentil of the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative said low-dose CT screening can detect early-stage disease but is underused: “Yet nationally, less than 6 percent of eligible individuals get screened. And in Texas, the rate is under 2 percent.”
Sentil urged public officials and community partners to raise awareness and increase screening access, saying local outreach and partnerships can “help save lives through early detection.” Mayor Nichols presented the proclamation and posed for photos with the honorees.
The proclamation encourages residents to learn about lung cancer screening and supports partnerships between the city, healthcare providers and nonprofits to promote early detection and research.
