District technology director presented a multi-year technology budget—Chromebooks, switches and a new main firewall—with e-rate eligibility for some items; the board discussed Chromebook price inflation and a proposed 4-year accidental-damage warranty.
Franklin Regional’s technology budget for the coming school year includes standard Chromebook replacements for the 1:1 program, end-of-life network switches and a new main firewall, the district’s technology lead told the board Wednesday.
Mr. Schreckengas summarized key items: Chromebooks for the 1:1 program, intermediate-school network switches (e-rate eligible), a main firewall (also e-rate eligible), STEM equipment refreshes, a physical server for redundancy, a high-school programming lab refresh, teacher/admin laptop refresh cycles and a replacement phone system. He noted supplies and prices are rising: several vendors increased Chromebook quotes twice within weeks.
On Chromebooks, the district presented a vendor quote valid through Feb. 28 and proposed purchasing devices with an optional four-year accidental-damage warranty that would replace damaged devices not intentionally broken for the warranty term. "This is a 4 year warranty ... and they ... will replace those as long as it's not intentionally damaged," Schreckengas said, arguing the warranty could reduce long-term repair costs.
Board members asked whether damaged panels would be repaired or replaced and about the timing and e-rate reimbursement (the district expects about 40% reimbursement on eligible projects). The board did not take a separate vote on the Chromebook purchase at this meeting; the technology items were brought forward as part of the budget presentation.
