Students from the Springfield Literacy Center and their teacher, Miss C, presented classroom work and community-service projects to the board; Miss C said kindergarten and first-grade i-Ready scores have doubled since the start of the year and students invited the public to upcoming events.
Teacher 'Miss C' and students from the Springfield Literacy Center (SLC) presented to the board on Feb. 26, highlighting academics, arts, athletics and service as the pillars of the program and describing classroom successes and community activities.
Miss C told the board that the SLC emphasizes both academic skills and student belonging, and she reported that the school has ‘‘doubled our i-Ready scores in both kindergarten and first grade since the beginning of the school year,’’ an outcome she attributed to staff support and family engagement. Students spoke in short statements: Sammy Jo said, "I love the SLC because we learn to work hard in reading and math," and Ben noted that during Kindness Week the students recorded nearly 700 acts of kindness.
Board members and audience members praised the students’ presentations, asked about graduating class years for the youngest students (several were identified as Class of 2037), and thanked staff for their work. The board’s pillar report also listed upcoming student and community events, including the Steve Stefani dance marathon on March 6 and the Springfield Theatre Workshop production of Matilda (March 13–20) and noted the Gold PASS Academy open house on March 5 for senior citizens.
The segment underscored elementary classroom work, cross-grade mentoring by high-school students and community-service partnerships that district staff said support student growth and engagement.
