Avon Grove counselors present 3-3-9 plan, expand Naviance use to K-12 portfolios

Avon Grove School District counselors told the board they are finalizing the district's 3-3-9 counseling plan and expanding the use of Naviance as a K-12 artifact library aligned to the district's future-ready profile.
Mr. Burns introduced a panel of counselors — Kristen Glass (Penn London Elementary), Christy Brown (AGI), Sammy Phelps (middle school) and Jenny Lubins (high school) — who described the plan the district must post for 28 days before the March board meeting and submit to Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) by March 31.
Kristen Glass said the counseling mission was revised to explicitly include the district's future-ready language: "Our mission is to educate, advocate and provide a safe environment for all of our diverse learners to become a future-ready graduate," she said.
Counselors described benchmarks for artifacts housed in Naviance: six artifacts by the end of grade 5, an additional six by the end of grade 8 including a personalized career plan, and eight more by the end of grade 11 with at least two demonstrating implementation of an individualized career plan. They said many lessons are integrated across grade levels and that Naviance lessons and exit tickets will serve as documented evidence for PDE review.
Christy Brown gave an example of counselor advocacy: a second-grade student whose hearing issues were identified and managed through counseling-led interventions and community referrals, showing how counselors provide preventative and responsive services.
Presenters said advisory council membership includes board members, assistant superintendents, principals, community partners and members of the Chamber of Commerce, and that the final district submission will be posted for public review following an internal revision meeting on Feb. 19.
At least one parent asked for better visibility into Naviance so families can see the artifacts and career-planning material their students build; the board acknowledged the request and confirmed the next board meeting would be March 10 at the high school cafeteria.
