York County approves visitor fund support for Yorkshire Playhouse exterior upgrades

Bob Sauter of the York County Visitors Bureau told the board the visitor improvement fund balance is about $117,000 and that the bureau’s most recent collections in May were roughly $23,000. He said the bureau’s request would be “like, for 1 month's collections,” and asked that the board approve support so the Playhouse can complete exterior and marquee work to increase public visibility.
Adam, a representative of the Yorkshire Playhouse, described the theater’s fundraising campaign and said the organization has set a $100,000 goal and has raised “somewhere around $30,000” so far. He said the planned marquee and signage are intended to make the building easier to recognize from Lincoln Avenue and to help advertise shows and sponsors.
The visitors bureau and downtown revitalization funds were presented as sources for the project; Sauter said the bureau’s recent collections would cover roughly one month of the request and described the Playhouse as a community asset that draws patrons from across the state and beyond.
A commissioner motioned to approve the visitors-bureau recommendation and the board approved the grant on roll call. The board’s visitors committee had voted unanimously to recommend the funding.
The Playhouse leaders said the exterior work is already underway in phases and that structural work should be completed soon, after which signage and lighting will be installed. Officials said any additional interior improvements would be pursued if funds remain after completing the exterior work.
The board’s approval directs staff to process the visitor improvement fund disbursement as bills are submitted; no specific dollar amount was recorded in the meeting transcript beyond the bureau’s description that the request would be comparable to a month’s collections (~$23,000).
