Chris Miller, director of the Minnesota Mississippi River Parkway Commission, said the regional meeting will forward support for Megan Christiansen as the Grand Rapids–Brainerd regional commissioner to the full MRPC in November.
"We do have one candidate who has submitted an application for this position. It's Megan Christiansen, executive director of Visit Grand Rapids," Miller said, introducing Christiansen as the lone applicant who applied by the stated deadline.
The recommendation matters because regional commissioners represent local stakeholders on the Great River Road. Andrew, administrative staff and research analyst with the Legislative Coordinating Commission, summarized the commission's makeup and authority, noting the MRPC was established under Minnesota Statute 161.1419 and is funded through state appropriations to the Legislative Coordinating Commission and occasional federal or state grants.
"MRPC was established in Minnesota statute 161.1419," Andrew said, explaining that regional commissioners serve four‑year terms, attend quarterly state MRPC meetings and the biannual national Mississippi River Parkway Commission gatherings, and serve on standing committees.
Support for Christiansen came from multiple participants. Carol, who previously ran the Great River Road program as project manager, said Christiansen has been active at both the state and Minnesota levels and "has really served the commission very well and I highly recommend that she be approved to continue this service." Diane echoed that endorsement, praising Christiansen's engagement with communities and social media work: "I echo everything that Carol said. Megan is a very active... engaged member." Chris Miller added that neighboring commissioner Carl Sam had reached out with his support for Christiansen's candidacy.
Because no regional representatives were present at the meeting, the group agreed not to call a formal motion. "I don't think we need to do a motion because no representatives from the region have joined," Andrew said, and staff will forward the compiled support and application materials to the full Minnesota MRPC for consideration at its November meeting.
Staff and technical contacts were introduced during the meeting. Andrew identified himself as the administrative staff contact for commission business and provided his contact information; Peter McDonough, a senior landscape architect in MnDOT's Office of Environmental Stewardship and the commission's technical adviser, said he supports outreach on Great River Road background and projects.
Chris Miller, who said he has served as the commission's director for several years and is stepping away from that role, thanked participants and welcomed Andrew and Peter to their roles.
The meeting concluded with no formal vote; the next procedural step is for staff to present the regional recommendation and application materials to the full Minnesota Mississippi River Parkway Commission at its November meeting for consideration.
