Director warns Brown Park grant may be at risk after parks board vote

At the Aug. 20 meeting Dr. Langford told the Sumner County Schools board that recent committee action to dissolve the county parks board could jeopardize a $625,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) earmarked for Brown Park.
Langford said the project is also supported in trust funds: "What's at stake is there's $500,000 in the Brown Trust that Mr. Brown designated in his estate to build a park," he told the board, and he added that roughly $185,000 in design fees had already been paid. Taken together with the state grant, Langford said the project represented more than $1.1 million in committed resources for the park and its planned cross-country course.
Langford said the parks-board action may affect the grant's eligibility and that he would follow up with the board by email to explain potential next steps. He framed the park as a community asset with unique benefits — including a full cross-country course that would expand county offerings beyond the single existing course — and urged timely resolution to preserve the funding.
Board members requested more details about the grant timetable and the administrative steps needed to protect the funding; Langford said he would provide additional information and next-step recommendations by email or at a future meeting.
