Sumner County director highlights AP gains, new hires and athletic projects

Director Dr. Langford used the board meeting to outline a series of academic and facilities developments, saying the district has seen a substantial increase in Advanced Placement participation, staffing improvements and capital investments.

Langford reported that AP scholar counts rose from roughly 100 in 2016 to 366 this year and noted that nearly 300 students scored 30 or higher on the ACT this year. "We've had a 51.9% increase year over year," he said, describing the growth as a reflection of expanded access and improved outcomes across multiple high schools.

On facilities, Langford said the district plans groundbreakings for athletic projects and expects to issue bids in early January for track resurfacing and related work at Gallatin, Station Camp, Merrill and North Sumner; he said the board could vote on bids in February. He also said the district has invested about $235 million in new school construction and renovations in recent years and has eliminated over 70 portable classrooms.

Langford introduced new central-office colleagues and praised the role of instructional coaches, school nurses, school resource officers and other staff in supporting student achievement. He framed staffing and capital investments as part of a long-term strategy to broaden opportunity and academic rigor across Sumner County schools.

Board members and staff asked clarifying questions about timelines for projects and operational details; Langford said architects and school leadership would finalize construction scheduling and site-specific preparations.

The district will circulate more-detailed timelines and bid documents ahead of the January bid openings and the February board vote.
