Student praised after lifesaving CPR; board hears her story and donor support

The Sumner County School Board recognized Liberty Creek High School senior Caitlin Williams on April 22 after a video and live remarks recounted an incident in which she used CPR training in a YMCA locker room and helped save a man's life.
"I knew he didn't have a pulse. I wasn't gonna hesitate," Caitlin Williams (speaker 15) said, describing how she performed chest compressions and continued until medical help arrived. Presenters noted that two nurses who were YMCA members assisted but that Williams persisted in performing compressions for about 10 minutes until handoff.
The board highlighted the human consequences of the action: that man, identified in the presentation as Billy Austin (speaker 16 in the clip), recently had been released from the hospital and has offered to cover Caitlin's college tuition. "When one good deed happens, it spills forth," the director said in praising the student and explaining how the story connected to the district's CTE and health science programs.
Board members applauded Williams and her teachers, and several members referenced the district's health science instruction and CT E partnerships that prepare students for real-life interventions.
The board presented formal recognition and thanked Williams and her family for their example; director and board members said the district would continue supporting students pursuing health-care careers.
